Homeostasis and Urea Flashcards
1
Q
What is Homeostasis?
A
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
2
Q
What 4 things does Homeostasis do?
A
- Removal of waste - Carbon Dioxide and Urea
- Controls the concentration of water and ions in the body
- Maintains the glucose concentration
- Controls the body temperature (37 degrees C)
3
Q
What is Urea?
A
A waste product formed by the break down of amino acids
4
Q
What does your body do if you eat too much protein?
A
It removes the amino groups and converts them to Urea
5
Q
What does the Thermoregulatory Centre in your brain do?
A
Monitors your body temperature (blood and skin) and triggers different responses
6
Q
What happens if your body temperature gets too hot?
A
- Your hairs will lie flat
- You sweat, which evaporates and removes the heat
- Vasodilation occurs which increases the blood flow to the skin, transferring heat quicker
7
Q
What happens if your body temperature gets too cold?
A
- Your hairs stand up (creating an insulating layer)
- Blood capillaries constrict (reducing blood supply to skin)
- You shiver, your muscles contract which needs respiration which releases energy to warm the body
