HLTAAP001-The Lymphatic & Immune Systems Flashcards
Structure of the Immune system:
Immunity is the human body’s line of defence against foreign agents such as bacteria and viruses also called pathogens.
Function of the Immune system:
The immune system protects your body from the outside invaders. These include germs such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and toxins. The immune system is made up of different organs, cells and proteins that work together.
Diseases of the immune system:
- Diebetes
- Rheumatoid
- Lupus
What can weaken your immune system:
- Smoking
- Alcohol
- Poor nutrition
Structure of the lymphatic system:
- lymphatic capillaries
- lymphatic vessels
- lymphatic nodes
- lymphatic tissue
- lymphatic ducts
Where are the lymph nodes and lymphatic tissues found?
The lymph nodes are found in the axilla (under the arm), in the neck, and groin.
Lymphatic tissues are found in the spleen, in the tonsils, and the thymus.
Function of the lymphatic system”
The function of the lymphatic system is to remove foreign substances and waste products from blood and lymph like dead blood cells, bacteria, viruses and cancer cells to to fight disease and to maintain the balance of fluid in the tissues.
Diseases and conditions of the lymphatic system:
- Lymphedema
- Swelling (due to lymph nodes blockage
What are the three primary functions of the lymphatic system:
Absorbs- fats and fat soluble vitamins from the digestive system and transport them to cells
Removes- cellular waste products from the tissues
Filters- and returns this excess tissue fluid to the circulatory system and to fill important roles as part of the immune system
What is lymph:
Lymph is a clear fluid that contains a high concentration of white blood cells and plays an important role in the immune response. Lymph nodes filter and transmit nutrients, lymph fluid, and waste between the body’s tissues and the bloodstream.
What are the two parts of the immune system?
Innate and Adaptive
What does the innate do
The innate is the first to detect when an organism does not belong to the body and directs the adaptive part to fight the intruder
