HLTAAP001-The Digestive System Flashcards
How Does The Body Convert Food Into Energy ?
When food passes through the digestive tract it is broken down, after its broken down it is absorbed into bloodstream and used by the body for energy.
What are the two main groups of organs in the digestive system
- Gastrointestinal Tract - Extends from the mouth to the anus
- Accessory Structures - Assisting in the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food.
Chat is the function of Chemical Breakdown
Chemical Breakdown happens when enzymes that are produced at various stages of the digestive tract as well as bacteria.
In the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) food is acted upon by bile that is secreted by the ball bladder, juices from the pancreases and secretions from the wall of the duodenum.
then the fats are changed into fatty acids, glycerol and carbohydrates into simple sugars and proteins to amino acids
What is the function of Mechanical Breakdown
Mechanical breakdown of food, happens when chewing and the action of muscles within the digestive tract. Food moves along the GTI by a wave like motion called peristalsis, breaking down the food manually.
What is the process of digestion
Diseases involved with the digestive system
What is the absorption process
Absorption is where substances pass through the walls of parts of the digestive tract into the bloodstream.
What percentage of absorption takes place in the ileum of the small intestine
90% of absorption of all nutrients happens in the ileum of the small intestine. this happens through small projection called villi
Where does the other 10% of absorption take place
The other 10% takes place in the stomach and large intestines.
What is the process of Elimination
