Who is high risk of developing HIV?
MSM, sex workers, IVDU, those with concurrent infections, transgender women
How is it transmitted?
Sexual contact, contaminated blood products, mother-t-child
Does it have a short or long incubation period?
Long
Are humans the only resevoir?
Yes
How is it treated?
Triple therapy with antiretroviral therapy
Given in combination to prevent resistance
NOT A CURE but does prevent transmission
What public health interventions can be done?
HIV testing - rapid diagnostic tests, integrate into other services to make it more accessible, target high risk individuals
Prevent transmission - condoms, male circumcision, needle exchange, PrEP, prevention of vertical transmission, sex education
Treatment as prevention - need good adherence, monitor for response, change drugs if needed
CONTACT TRACING - sexual and injecting
Prevent opportunistic infections and co-morbidities
Where is the burden the greatest?
Sub-Saharan Africa and other LMICs
30% occur in people aged 15-24
