What is meant by the term segregation ?
Seperating groups of people usually by race or religion .
What is meant by discrimination ?
Treating people unfairly because of their race or religion.
What were the Jim crow laws ?
These were laws set out to enforce segregation between black and white people . They stated that ‘ segregation was seperate but equal ‘ .
What was segregation caused by in the north ?
Discrimination
Where did most black people live ?
Ghettos
What are ghettos ?
The poorest parts of towns and cities where people crowded together in buildings that were not well maintained and had poor facilities .
What was differemt about segregation in the north and the south of the USA ?
Segregation in the north was produced by discrimination whereas in the south there were actual laws that prevented black people from having the same rights as white people .
What are federal laws ?
Laws which cover the whole country
What are the state laws ?
Laws that only affected one state .
What is a bill ?
A proposed law
Who has power in the federal section of laws ?
The supreme court , the congress and the president .
What does the federal congress do ?
Passes laws . The congress is made up of the hous of representatives and the senate .
What does the federal supreme court do ?
They can overule state laws if unconstitutional.
