History of Antimicrobials Flashcards
Paul Ehrlich
1904: An Industry Scientist | Found that certain Dyes had antimicrobial effects
Gerard Domagk
1935: is the father of Hildegarde who was the first human trial and as a women. That is a huge deal. Hildegarde pricked herself with a sewing or knitting needle and got staph and was dying - Gerard than gave her Prontosil Red and discovered that it was affective again Staph and Steph, & other G(+) positive organisms.
Jacques and Theresa Trefouel
a French scientist couple that actually discovered how the Prontosil Red dye was actually affective against those Gram+ positive organisms.
The Prontosil Red dye broke down to Sulfanilamine once inside the body & that sulfa portion of the dye is what was effective against the microbes
When was Penicillin Discovered and than forgotten?
1896
Alexander Fleming
1928: Scottish scientist who isolated Penicillin in his office in Scotland, he had a thick accent with poor social skills.
1931: When he isolated the Penicillin he quickly tossed he filed it away because “he thought it would break down in the bod to quickly” but the true story is that he attempted to share his discovery at a London conference but his accent & poor public speaking skills made society dismiss him and he got butt hurt about it.
1939: Until 2 young scientist convinced him to continue his research again & brought the penicillin discovery to America by smearing the penicillin microbes onto the inner lining of their coats and got onto a plane with zero luggage and successfully made it to America.
◦ Remember that they couldn’t just bring the samples on the airplane as it was not something society would of accepted nor would the law at their time.
When was Penicillin Mass Produced?
1940
