Histology Workshop Flashcards
Revision
Once centrifuged, the blood is allowed to stand for an hour, what is the top layer of the blood?
Plasma
Once centrifuged, the blood is allowed to stand for an hour, what is the bottom layer composed of?
Cells (buffy coat(white cells and platelets) and packed red blood cells)
Which is the most common blood cell?
- Red blood cells
- Eosinophils
- Platelets
- Neutrophils
- Lymphocytes
red blood cells
What is the most common type of white blood cell?
Neutrophils
Where is the cell are most of the acids?
The Nucleus
Why is the nucleus often referred to as basophilic?
Because of it being acidic it as an affinity for the dye.
Which blood cells don’t have a nucleus?
- Red cells
- Eosinophils
- Platelets
- Red cells and lymphocytes
- Red cells and platelets
Red cells and platelets
What is the most common type of blood cell?
- Basophil
- Eosinophil
- Monocyte
- Lymphocyte
- Neutrophil
Neutrophil
What is the second most common type of white blood cell?
- Basophil
- Eosinophil
- Monocyte
- Lymphocyte
- Neutrophil
Lymphocyte
( You cannot differentiate from a microscope whether a lymphocyte is a B cell or a T cell without chemical markers)
(Very few of your circulating cells are B lymphocytes, almost all are T lymphocytes).
What do the white vacuoles within the cell indicate?
It indicates that the cell undergoes phagocytosis.
What type of cell has a folded nucleus into a horse shoe/kidney bean shape and has no granules?
Monocyte
What is the difference between monocytes circulating and once they have entered tissues?
Monocyte circulate in the blood and once they enter a tissue they become tissue specific.
What white blood cell has a segmented nucleus with 2 lobes?
Eosinophil
The machines in the lab are designed to analyse one cell at a time, what happens if a platelet clump goes through?
It will not register and so there will be a low platelet count because it is not designed to differentiate between multiple of the same cells.
What is anaemia?
A lack of red blood cells often reflected in haemoglobin`
