Histology of the breast Flashcards
How many lobes are in the breast?
15-25 lobes
What is in each breast lobe?
Compound tubule-acinar gland which drains via a series of ducts leading to the nipple
What are the suspensory ligaments?
Larger condensations of fibrous connective tissue that extend from the dermis of the skin to the deep fascia overlying the muscles of the anterior chest wall
What is the basic functional secretory unit of the breast?
Terminal duct lobular unit ( TDLU)
What is the expanded duct region near the nipple termed?
Lactiferous sinus
What type of connective tissue surrounds the lobule?
Dense fibrocollagenous
What type of connective tissue surrounds the acini and why?
Looser connective tissue, allows rapid expansion in pregnancy
Within the lobule what type of cell line the acini?
Secretory epithelial cells (vary from cuboidal to columnar)
What are the secretory cells surrounded by?
Myoepithelial cells
What type of epithelium lines the lactiferous duct?
Surface- Thin stratified squamous
Deeper- Stratified cuboidal
Mammory glands represent modified ——- ——–
Sweat glands
What type of epithelium covers the nipple?
Thin highly pigmented keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
What is the core of the nipple?
Fibrocollagenous tissue mixed with smooth muscle bundles
What 3 changes occur in the luteal phase of the menstural cycle in breast histology?
1- Epithelial cells increase in height
2-Lumina of the cells become enlarged
3- Small amounts of secretions appear in the ducts
TRUE/FALSE
During pregnancy oestrogen and progesterone stimulate proliferation of secretory tissue and fibro-fatty tissue becomes sparse
TRUE
