Histology Flashcards
What kind of epithelium lines the thin limb of the loop of henle?
Simple squamous lining
What is the epithelial lining in the thick ascending limb?
Simple cuboidal
Which one; the proximal or distal convoluted tubule, has a brush border?
Proximal
What is the epithelium of the distal convoluted tubule?
Simple cuboidal
What is the epithelial lining of the collecting ducts?
Simple columnar
What are the three components of the juxtaglomerular apparatus?
Macula densa
Juxtaglomerular cells
Extraglomerular mesangial cells
What is the purpose of the macula densa cells?
They sense the ion composition in the distal convoluted tubule
What do the juxtaglomerular cells do?
They contain and secrete renin
Where are the juxtaglomerular cells?
In the wall of the afferent arteriole
What epithelium is most of the urinary tract lined with?
Transitional epithelium
What lines the distal end of the urethra in the female ?
Stratified squamous epithelium
Describe the epithelium lining the male urethra along the different parts
- Prostatic urethra (3-4cm goes from bladder through the prostate gland) lined by transitional cell epithelium
- Membranous urethra ( extends 1cm from prostate to the bulb of the penis) Stratified columnar epithelium
- Penile urethra (15cm, lined by stratified columnar epithelium which becomes stratified squamous near the tip of the penis)
