Histology Flashcards
Functions of Epithelial Tissue (avascular)
Absorption, Secretion, Protection, Filtration
Function of Simple Squamous
Rapid diffusion of materials
Found in blood vessels and lung tissues
Function of Simple Cuboidal
Secretion and absorption of substances. Found in tissues of the kidney
Function of Simple Columnar
Secretion of mucus for protection and absorption of substances. May have cilia/goblet cells. Found in digestive tract
Function of Stratified Squamous
Thick layers that provide protection for lower layers. Found in epidermal layer of skin
Stratified Cuboidal
More than one layer of cuboidal cells. Rare in body. Found in salivary and mammary glands
Stratified Columnar
Free surface is lined with columnar cells. Rare in body. Found in larynx and male urethra
Pseudo-Stratified
Cell nuclei are found at different levels, so it appears stratified, but isn’t. Secretes and absorbs substances. Found in upper respiratory system
Transitional Epithelium
Free surface of cells vary in appearance based on stretching of tissue. Found in urinary bladder
Functions of Connective tissue
Provides support, insulation, protection, and transports substances
Location of Areolar Loose CT
Under epithelium and around other organs
Types of fibers/threads
Collagen, elastic, or reticular
Function/Location of Adipose Loose CT
Insulates/ warms the body. Provides nutrients to other cells
Function/ location of regular DT
Collagen fibers arranged in 1 direction. Provides “tensile strength”. Found in ligaments and tendons
Function/Location of Irregular DT
Collagen fibers arranged in many directions. Provides strength in multiple directions. Found in capsules around organs
