O: Pectineal line of the pubis
I: Pectineal line of the femur
A: Hip adduction and flexion
In: Femoral and obturator nn.
Gluteus maximus
Origin: Posterior surface of ilium; Sacrum via thoracolumbar fascia, and sacrotuberous ligament
I:
- Upper fibers: iliotibial tract on Gerdy’s tubercle (tibia)
- Lower fibers: gluteal tuberosity of femur
A: Hip Extension, external rotation
- Upper fibers: abduction
- Lower fibers: adduction
In: Inferior gluteal n.
Gluteus medius
O: Posterior surface of ilium (superior 1/3)
I: Greater trochanter
A: Abduction
- Anterior fibers: flexion, internal rotation
- Posterior fibers: extension, external rotation
In: Superior gluteal n.
Gluteus minimus
O: Between anterior and inferior gluteal line of ilium
I: Greater trochanter
A: Abduction
- Anterior fibers: flexion, internal rotation
In: Superior gluteal n.
Piriformis
O: Sacrum
I: Greater trochanter
A: Abduction, external rotation, internal rotation

- Superior: spine of ischium
- Inferior: Ischial tuberosity
