Rectus abdominis

A

O: Pubic symphysis, and pubic crest

I: Xiphoid process, and costal cartilages of 5th-7th ribs

A: Trunk flexion, compresses abdominal viscera, expiration and stabilises pelvis

In: Intercostales nn. (T7-T11), Subcostal n. (T12)

External oblique

A

O: Outer surface of 5th-12th ribs

I: Linea alba, pubic tubercle, anterior half of iliac crest

A:
Bilateral: Trunk flexion, compresses abdominal viscera, expiration and stabilises pelvis
Unilateral: Trunk lateral flexion (ipsilateral), trunk rotation (contralateral)

In:
Motor: Intercostal nn. (T7- T11), Subcostal n. (T12)
Sensory: Iliohypogastric n. (L1)

Internal oblique

A

O: Thoracolumbar fascia, anterior two-thirds of the intermediate line of the iliac crest, inguinal ligament (and ASIS)

I: Lower border of 10th-12th ribs, linea alba, and pubic crest

A:
Bilateral: Trunk flexion, compresses abdominal viscera, expiration and stabilises pelvis
Unilateral: Trunk lateral flexion (ipsilateral), trunk rotation (ipsilateral)

In: Intercostal nn. (T7-T11), subcostal n. (T12), iliohypogastric n. (L1), ilioinguinal n. (L1)

Transversus abdominis

A

O: Inner surface of 7th-12th costal cartilage, Thoracolumbar fascia, Anterior two thirds of iliac crest, and Lateral third of inguinal ligament and associated iliac fascia

I: Linea alba, aponeurosis of internal abdominal oblique muscle; pubic crest, pectinal line of pubis

A:
Bilateral: Compresses abdominal viscera and expiration
Unilateral: Trunk rotation (ipsilateral)

In: Intercostal nerves (T7-T11), subcostal nerve (T12), iliohypogastric nerve (L1), ilioinguinal nerve (L1)

Quadratus lumborum

A

O: Internal lip of posterior iliac crest, and iliolumbar ligament

I: Inferior border of the 12th rib, and TP of L1-L4

A: Bilateral: Lumbar extension and fixes Ribs 12 during inspiration
Unilateral: Lateral flexion of trunk (ipsilateral)

In: Subcostal n. (T12), anterior rami of spinal n. (L1-L4)
