Hip Ortho Exams Flashcards
Pt supine. Thigh is flexed, abducted, externally rotated & extended while downward pressure is placed on the opposite ASIS and same knee. (+) Pain in hip
Patrick’s Test aka Fabere
* Hip lesion
Pt supine. Dr flexes, abducts, & laterally rotates hip. Dr then applies pressure over the opposite ASIS with one hand and with the other hand presses down on the knee. (+) pain in hip
Laguerre’s Test (Patrick’s test in the air)
* Hip joint lesion
While pt is supine, the thigh is flexed with the knee bent upon the abdomen. (+) opposite thigh/knee rises off table.
Thomas test
* Hip Flexion contracture
Pt supine. Pt flexes both knees to 90 with the feet placed flat on the table and both malleoli approximated. The examiner compares the height of the knees. (+) significant difference
Allis test

Barlow’s
* Congenital Hip Dysplasia
Pt side-lying, involved side up. Dr places one hand on pelvis. Thigh is abducted and extended. Dr then allows leg to drop into adduction. (+) knee stays elevated
Ober’s Test
* Tensor Fascia Lata Contracture
Pt prone. Heel is approximated to the buttock after flexion of knee (sign). Approximated to opposite buttock and hyperextend (test). (+) pain
Ely’s Sign = Rectus Femoris Contracture
Ely’s Test = Hip Lesion, Iliopsoas irritation, or Lsp NR
