High Energy Feedstuffs Flashcards
What are the most important species of cereal grains?
corn/maize, rice, wheat, barley, oats, and sorghum.
What is the number one grain in the US?
corn (also known as maize).
Where is corn mainly produced?
in the midwest.
What is the energy and fiber content like in corn?
high energy, low fibre
What is a popular feed ingredient for ruminants?
corn and cob meal.
What is the difference between corn meal and corn grain?
corn meal has more crude fibre, it is 25% less digestible than grain, and has lower CP.
How much of the cereal intake should wheat make up?
50%.
Who mainly uses wheat?
humans for bread and pasta.
This grain is cold tolerant, it is more drought tolerant than wheat, and it must not be fed green.
Barley
This grain is a big feed for horses, can be fed whole or rolled, and has low fibre and less energy than other grains.
oats
Is sorghum more or less drought resistant, when compared to corn?
More drought resistant.
This grain by-product is removed when white flour is made and has more fiber and less energy than whole grain
bran
This is used to increase the palatability of rations and is high on energy and low on protein
molasses
These 2 feedstuffs are mainly used for energy.
Sugar Beet Pulp and citrus pulp.
these are often used to increase the energy density of a ration, are highly digestible but are low in protein, and are mainly used as an energy source.
