High And Low Pressure πŸ“– Flashcards

1
Q

Why the UK weather varies

A

The weather in the UK varies a lot in the winter it’s very cold and in summer it varies, but the weather does change a lot. We are at a frontal zone where the air meets. The UK is rainy and variable as it has low air pressure and is usually temperable.

Q

Air pressure

A
  • The weight of the air and the force this exerts on the ground.
  • Pressure has a big impact on the climatic features of an area.
  • There are two types of air pressure : high and low.
  • Low pressure air rising, high pressure air sinking.

Q

Low pressure

A
  • Rising air.
  • Creates clouds due to condensation.
  • Clouds = rain.

Q

High pressure

A
  • Falling air.
  • No evaporation, no condensation.
  • No clouds = no rain.
  • Desert.
  • Polar.

Q

Inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ)

A
  • Climate is temperable of weather over a period of time.
  • Areas with regular low pressure experience high rainfall totals.
  • The highest rainfalls at the equator are associated with permanent zone of low pressure called the Inter-tropical convergence zone.
  • It moves north of the equator in summer.
  • In the winter it moves south of the equator.

Q

Facts

A

The equator receives the most solar insulation, which causes air to rise which then forms low air pressure which causes heavy and regular rainfall which forms Columbus clouds (thunder clouds). As the air rises it expands and becomes less dense causing low air pressure.
