Earthquakes And Tsunamis 📖 Flashcards
Why earthquakes occur
Occur along fault lines, friction occurs causing energy which forms a shockwave, the energy is sent out as seismic waves
Richter scale
The strength or magnitude, of an earthquake is measured using the richter scale. It is numbered 1-10. It is logarithmic scale, 6.0 earthquake is 10 times more powerful than 5.0
Richter scale
- you wouldn’t notice.
- 50 times more powerful than one
- 30 times more energy than two
- Windows may break
- Damages buildings
- Major catastrophe
- Biggest ever recorded 9.5
How is a tsunami formed
Indian plate moves towards Eurasian plate, Indian plate forced downwards, convergent plate movement causes earthquake, sea above earthquake forced upwards, seismic waves spread quickly outwards, in the deep sea the waves travel at up to 800km/h, in shallow water the waves slow to 40km/h and a height of 15 meters, waves crash onto shore devastating low lying area.
Facts
Earthquakes happen at all plate boundaries. They occur when moving plates lock or snag and pressure builds up. This is eventually released as seismic waves. The worst earthquakes are found at convergent plate boundaries as there is more friction when the plates move in this way. The plates move due to convection currents.
