What is heroin?
Heroin is an opiate (drugs derived from the opium poppy) and is a chemically altered form of morphine.
What is morphine and is it more or less powerful than heroin?
Morphine is a powerful analgesic (painkiller) and hero is three times more powerful than morphine.
What does heroin mimic?
Heroin mimics endorphins which attach to receptors to reduce the experience of pain and provide positive reinforcement.
What is the mode of action of heroin?
Heroin acts by stimulating opioid receptors and mimics the effects of endorphins (naturally occurring opioids). Heroin causes an increase in the amount of dopamine at the synapses which actives the reward system and produces feelings of well being. This action takes place in the nucleus accumbens.
Positive effects of heroin?
Produces feelings d euphoria and the analgesic effect gives a feeling of calm and aches and pains disappear. Breathing becomes slower and shallower, heart rate slows and the user feels sleepy and relaxed.
Negative effects of heroin?
Slowing of breath is the side effect that is responsible for deaths from overdoses. Constipation and nausea as heroin slow movement of food in intestines. Sex drive is Alps likely low.
