What is an epigastric hernia and who is most likely to get them?
This is a lump in the midline between the umbilicus and the xiphisternum
Most common in men aged 20-30
Also known as lateral ventral hernia
Rare and seen in older patients
Spigelian hernia
How might an obturator hernia present?
More common in females, typically presents with bowel obstruction
Difference between umbilical and paraumbilical hernia?
Umbilical - symmetrical bulge
Paraumbilical - asymmetric bulge
How should you manage paediatric inguinal hernia?
Should be repaired surgically soon after diagnosis as at risk of incarceration
How should you manage infantile umbilical hernia?
The vast majority resolve without intervention before age 4/5
More common in premature and afro-caribbean babies
