Spicy/Bitter/ Aromatic
Warming: good for cases of coldness/dampness
SP/ST/LU
1) Spicy=MOVES QI/SP: distention/nausea/bloating/cloying

2) bitter= moving Qi DOWNWARD: belching, morning sickness, hiccups
3) dries damp, Trx phlegm/LU: copious phlegm during day

Citrus Aurantium Immaturus; unripe bitter orange- green- so STRONG
Spicy/bitter/Sl. Cold
SP/ST/ LI
1) moves qi, reduces food stag (LI): CONSTIPATION (or diarrhea), digestive insufficiency by increasing acidity, pain/distention

2) moves qi/ phlegm DOWN: use w/ phlegm in chest or LUs, coughing, wheezing
3) MR: increases BP, AIDS PROLAPSE (hemorrhoids, uterus, hernia)

upward and downward movement=”zipper” herb

Citrus aurantium maturus, MATURE bitter orange-gentler
Spicy, bitter, Sl. Cold
SP/ST
1) moves qi, reduces food stag= gentler than Zhi Shi
more appropriate / weak/deficient Pt. digestive insufficiency, abd pain, distention

2) moves qi, trx phlegm (LU): cough/asthma/ sputum, goes to lower metal thru LI
3) increases BP, stimulates HT, which is why it moves food stag

Contra: diuretic drugs
HTN- if going to use alone; in a formula its ok- can balance it out

Bitter, cold, Sl TOXIC -never use alone, low dosing 1-3 gms

LV, ST, SI, UB

  1. Regulates qi, reduces variety of pain: hypochondriac pain, pain in genitals (wood overriding earth)
  2. Clears heat, dries damp: use w/ heat and dampness, folks w/ bitter taste in mouth, hernia, testicular swelling, deep heat in LV, HEPATITIS, JAUNDICE
  3. Expels parasites: round worms, tape worms (toxic treats toxic)

side effects: jaundice, yellow skin
