Liver detox pathways:
Phase 1: Hydroxylation - makes toxins water-soluble & easier to excrete
Phase 2: Conjugation - makes toxins fat-soluble, “pack em up, move em out”
How much bile is produced per day?
500-1000mL
What does a hepatoprotective herb do? How does a hepatic differ? A cholegogue? A bitter?
Hepatoprotective: treats liver problems, has anti-hepatotoxic effect.
Hepatic: supports liver fxn & metabolism, non-specific.
Cholagogue: Directly stimulates secretion & release of bile.
Bitters: Stimulates secretion of digestive enzymes & bile.
Contraindications for hepatic/cholegogue use:
acute cholecystitis obstructive jaundice acute viral hepatitis liver toxicity w/lowered bowel fxn atonic conditions w/depletion acute diarrhea w/irritable bowel
