Q

What is the origin of medicine in Greek Mythology?

A

the centaur Chiron created medicine and as the ages progressed, he instructed both gods and mortals in its art and application. He raised and taught Apollo, Achilles, Jason, and Asclepius among gods, demigods and heroes, teaching them the practice of medicine; at first immortal, he traded this gift for mortality after sustaining a wound caused by one of Heracles’ shafts so that he could find rest in death (Grimal, 1965). Chiron became known for this reason as the “wounded healer,” his story unfolding in the life patterns of those who find his namesake planet in their astrological charts (Reinhart, 2010).

Q

How did Alcmaeon of Croton change the idea or understanding of the etiology of disease?

A

disease as a part of nature and subject to the same natural laws that ruled the rest of the cosmos. He regarded health as dependent on the equilibrium of bodily forces, and disease on the supremacy of any one force, another idea that later reemerged in theories of humoralism (Longrigg, 1997).
