Hepatitis Viruses Flashcards
Why are hepatitis viruses categorized the same?
NOT evolutionary origin
-Similar symptoms – infect hepatocytes
What can all hepatitis viruses cause? How should this be treated?
They all cause acute hepatitis
-supportive care
What is the transmission method of hep A?
Fecal Oral
What is the transmission method of HepB?
Sex, birth, blood
What is the transmission method of hepC?
sex, birth blood
Which hepatitis viruses can be controlled by vaccination?
Hep A and B
How would you diagnose HepA?
Serology:
- IgM = acute
- IgG = recovered/ vaccinated
How would you diagnose HepB?
- viral surface antigen = acute
- igG against viral surface antigen = recovered/ vaccinated
How would you diagnose HepC?
- EIA = real or false positive
- RIBA = confirmation of a real positive
Which strains cause chronic hepatitis?
-B and C
What can chronic hepatitis lead to?
Cirrhosis and or cancer
What is a standard treatment for chronic hepatitis, which unfortunately has many side effects?
-polymerase inhibitors and IFN
For patients affected with serotype 1, which treatment method can be used in addition to polymerase inhibitors and iFN to improve treatment?
-Protease inhibitors
What is the issue with standard liver transplants ? (from deceased donors)
- if virus is not cleared from secondary sites - new liver can become infected
What may be the new standard of treatment for chronic hepatitis?
-a short course of antivirals preceding live donor liver transplant
