Q

Why did the rebels of the Pilgrimage of Grace style themselves as pilgrims and what was on their banner?

A

A pilgrim is someone who does something for a faith. They called themselves this because they thought they were doing something for their religion, Catholism. Also, the King couldn’t punish pilgrims in the same way they could punish rebels.

Their banner showed the 5 wounds of Christ.

He promised them what they wanted only if they went back home immediately. When a few months passed and nothing happened, they came back to the King and said, where is what you promised us?

Q

Explain 2 reasons why the Pope was reluctant to grant Henry an annulment.

A
  1. He was captured by the Holy Roman Emperor who was Catherine of Aragon’s nephew. He wouldn’t have wanted his aunt ridiculed.
  2. The Pope was considered infallible and he had given the initial permission for Henry to marry his brother’s widow. If he now agreed to the annulment, he was agreeing that he made a poor decision in the first place.
