Historical events of Henry VIII’s 55-year reign
1491 – Henry is born and is not expected to ever be King
1502 – Arthur, his brother dies from sweating sickness. Henry is heir to the throne with no training.
1509 – Henry VII, his father dies and Henry is coronated King Henry VIII.
1509 – Henry marries Catherine of Aragon, his brothers ex-wife.
1511 – Henry, Duke of Cornwall is born(only lived 7 weeks)
1513 – Battle of the Spurs (battle to invade France which ultimately fails)
1513 – Battle of Flodden. Catherine of Aragon raises an army to defeat the invading Scots
1516 – Mary, 1st England is born
1518 – Treaty of London put in place by Cardinal Wolsey for peace with France and Spain
1520 – Henry Fitzroy, an illegitimate sone is born
1520 – Field of the Cloth of Gold, treaty with France is signed but doesn’t last
1525 – Henry is infatuated with Lady Anne Boleyn
1527 – 1535 – the KING’S GREAT MATTER – henry is desperate for a divorce so he can have a male heir.
1529 - Cardinal Wolsey is accused treason by Praemunire and later dies
1532 - Thomas Crammer is made the new Archbishop of Canterbury
1533 – Marriage of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII declared invalid. Mary is a bastard.
1533 – marriage to Anne Boleyn, Acts of treason, Acts of Succession.
1533 – Elizabeth 1st of England is born
1534 – Acts of Supremacy
1534 – Reformation of the Church of England
1535 - Thomas Cromwell was appointed to the church position of Vicar General which helps with the monastery dissolution
1535 - Stage 1 of the dissolution of the monasteries. Henry carries out a survey to find them corrupt
1536 – Queen Anne Boleyn is beheaded for adultery, incest and treason
1536 – Henry marries Jane Seymour
1536 – Stage 2 Dissolution of the SMALL monasteries
1536 – Pilgrimage of Grace (population rises against the King for destroying the monasteries and Catholic Church - they are defeated)
1537 – Edward VI of England is born
1537 – Queen Jane dies from complications with childbirth
1539 - Stage 3 dissolution of the larger monasteries
1539 – The 6 articles – the whip with 6 strings is published
1540 – Henry marries Anne of Cleaves as part of a treaty with Germany.
1540 - Henry annuls marriage with Anne of Cleaves as she is ugly and smelly. She becomes his adopted sister.
1540 – Henry marries Catherine Howard
1542 – Catherine Howard is beheaded for adultery
1543 – Henry marries Catherine Parr
1544 – Henry invades Boulogne, then quickly retreats home awaiting French invasion
1545 – Battle of the Solentand the sinking of the Mary Rose
1547- Henry dies from obesity and related illnesses
1547 – age 9, Edward VI is crowned King with many advisors
