Heat Flashcards
What is heat?
The transfer of energy between objects that are different temperatures.
What does heat cause?
It causes objects to get hot or cold under the right conditions.
What happens when two objects that are different temperatures come in contact?
Heat is ALWAYS transferred from the object with the higher temperature to the object with the lower temperature.
What is thermal energy?
The total energy of the particles that make up a substance.
What is thermal energy measured in?
Joules
What does German energy depend on?
How much of a substance there is.
The greater the thermal energy…
The more particles there are in a given substance.
When will energy always be transferred?
When objects with different temperatures come in contact.
When will the energy stop transferring?
When the objects reach the same temperature.
What is thermal conduction?
The transfer of thermal energy from one object to another through direct contact.
What is an example of thermal conduction?
Transferring heat from your skin to a cold stethoscope.
What are insulators?
Substances that do not conduct energy well.
