Buoyant Forces Flashcards
What other gas is also a fluid?what does it do?
Air exerts a buoyant force
What is a buoyant force?
The upward force that fluids exert on all matter
What does water do?
It exerts fluid pressure on all sides of an object (The pressure exerted horizontally on one side of an object is equal to the pressure exerted horizontally on the other side of the object. So, in effect, these two cancel each other out.)
What happens when depth increases?
Pressure increases
What happens because of pressure increasing with depth?
The pressure on the bottom do the object is greater than on the top of the object. The water exerts a net upward force on the object.
What is Archemeaies principal?
The buoyant force on an object in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of the volume of the fluid that the object displaces.
What determines the buoyant force on an object? Why?
The weight of the displaces fluid because weight has nothing to do with buoyant force.
When will an object sink?
If it’s weight is greater than the weight of the fluid displaced.
