Gravity And Motion Flashcards
Why do objects fall to the ground at the same rate?
The acceleration due to gravity is he same for all objects.
What did Galileo prove?
the mass of an object does not affect the rate at which it falls
What is the rate objects accelerate towards the earth at?
9.8 m/s/s
What does 9.8 m/s/s mean?
for every second an object falls, the objects downward velocity increases by 9.8 m/s
What does air resistance depend on?
The size and shape of the object.
What is affected by air resistance?
All things that are falling.
What happens when the net force on an object is not zero?
The object accelerates downward.
When does air resistance increase?
When the speed of the object increases.
What stops the upward increase of air resistance?
When it exactly matches with the force if gravity. When this happens, the net force is zero and the object stops accelerating.
What terminal velocity?
When an object falls at a constant velocity.
When is an object in free fall?
only if gravity is pulling it down and no other forces are acting on it
Where does free fall occur?
In a vacuum (a place where there is no matter or space)
What is orbiting?
An object is said to be orbiting when it is traveling in a circular or nearly circular oath around another object.
What is projectile motion?
Projectile motion is the curved path am object follows when thrown or propelled near the surface of the earth.
Give 3 examples of projectile motion.
Leaping dancers, thrown balls, hopping grasshoppers.
