heart valves Flashcards
what are the 3 reasons we don’t auscultate directly over valves?
presence of bone
heart orientation
acoustics of blood flow
what does each valve consist of?
Valve orifice- surrounded by
Fibrous ring- to which is attached
Cusps- flaps that close valve
what are the 4 valves of the heart?
Pulmonary
Aortic
Mitral
Tricuspid
what is the hearts beat?
2 stroke- lub dup
which sound is produced by contraction of the ventricles and closure of the tricuspid and mitral valves?
lub sound
which sound is produced by closure of the pulmonary and aortic valves?
dup sound
which valve is located behind the medial end of the 3rd left costal cartilage?
pulmonary valve
pulmonary valve is most audible?
over LEFT 2nd intercostal space
which valve is located behind the left half of the sternum medial to the 3rd intercostal space?
aortic valve
where is the aortic valve most audible?
RIGHT 2nd intercostal space
which valve is located behind the left half of the sternum medial to the 4th intercostal space?
mitral valve
where is the mitral valve most audible?
LEFT 5th intercostal space at midclavicular line
why is the mitral valve the most diseased of the valves?
because of the high pressure of the left ventricle- leads to micro abrasions of cusps of mitral valve
which valve is located behind the right half of the sternum medial to the 4th intercostal space?
tricuspid valve
where is the tricuspid valve more audible?
left 5th intercostal space at border with sternum
