Heart Notes Flashcards
The function of the Circulatory System
- Protection
- Regulation
- Trasport substances from place to place in the body
Respiratory System
Oxygen from lungs to body tissue and carbon dioxide back to lungs
Digestive System
Nutrients from the digestive system to body tissue
Endocrine System
Hormones to target organs
Urinary System
Wastes to kidneys for excretion
White Blood Cells
Destroy microorganisms and cancer cells
Antibodies
Destroy Pathogens
Platelets
Initiate blood clotting
Function: Regulation
- Stabilize fluid distribution
- Stabilize pH of fluids
- Regulate body temp
How much blood in an adult
4-6 liters
Plasma
- 55%
- Clear, yellow fluid
- Combination of water, protein, nutrients, hormones, waste, and gases
Function of plasma
Transport of nutrients, waste, electrolyte balance, defense
Erythrocytes
- Pick up oxygen from the lungs
- Pick up carbon dioxide from the tissues and upload to the lungs
Hemoglobin
Protein that carries oxygen
Thrombocytes (AKA Platelets)
- Fragments of marrow cells
Function of thrombocytes
- Stop bleeding by secreting clotting factors
- Repair blood vessels and initiate cites of inflammation
Leukocytes
- Protect against infections and diseases
- 5 types
- Phagotize bacteria, pathogens, cancer cells
Leukemia
Overprotection of abnormal leukocytes which leads to infection and bleeding
Erythropoiesis
- Kidneys detect low oxygen levels and secrete erythropoietin (protein)
- Tells stemcells in the red bone marrow to produce RBC
- Live about 120 days
- Destroyed by liver and spleen
Antigen
Complex molecules that identify the cell
Antibody
Proteins that identify foreign material made in response to the wrong blood type.
