Heart Disease Flashcards
How do atheromas form
Endothelium becomes damaged so white blood cells and lipids from the blood clump together under the lining forming fatty streaks. Over time more white blood cells, lipids and connective tissue build up and harden to form a fibrous plaque
Why are arthrromas bad
Partially blocks the lumen of the artery and restricts blood flow, which causes blood pressure to increase
How do aneurysms occur
Atheroma plaques damage and weaken arteries. They also narrow arteries, increasing blood pressure. When blood travels through a weakened artery at high pressure, it may push the inner layers of the artery through the outer elastic layer to form an aneurysm
What causes a hemorrhage
An aneurysm bursting
What causes a myocardial infarction
A coronary artery becomes blocked and an area of the heart muscle will be totally cut off from its blood supply, receiving no oxygen. This caused a myocardial infarction (heart attack)
High blood pressure increases risk of damage to artery walls which
Increases risk of atheroma
Atheroma causes blood clots which can cause
Myocardial infarcations
High cholesterol diet increases fatty deposits which cause
Atheromas
