Ecosystems Flashcards
Ecosystem is
All the organisms living in a community plus all the abiotic conditions in the area in which they live
Habitat is
Place where an organism lived within an ecosystem
Niche is
Roles of a species within its habitat
What happens if two species try to occupy the same niche
Compete with one another. One species will be more successful than the other so only one species survives
Adaptation is
Feature that members of species have that increases the chance of survival and reproduction
Adaptation features can be
Physiological
Behavioural
Anatomical
Natural selection
Organisms with better adaptations are more likely to survive reproduced and pass on the advantageous alleles that determines these adaptations. This increases he frequency of these alleles in the population which means the adaptations become more common
Population is
All the species organisms of one species in a habitat
Community is
Populations of different species in a habitat
Population size is
Total number of organisms of one species in a habitat
Carrying capacity is
The maximum stable population size of a species that an ecosystem can support
Abundance is
Number of individuals of one species in a particular area
Frequency is
Number of samples a species is recorded in
Percentage cover is
How much of the area you’re investigating is covered by a species
Distribution is
Where a particular species is within the area you’re investigating
