Heart Blood Lymph Flashcards
Plasma
The liquid part of the blood
Serum
The plasma without clotting proteins
An open circulatory system
Blood leaves the blood vessels and flows around the cells of the animals body before re entering blood vessels again
Closed circulatory system
Means that blood remains in a continuous system of blood vessels
Artery
A blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart, has thick muscle and elastic fibre around its small lumen and endothelium with no valves
Vein
A blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood to the heart has a large lumen and thinner walls with valves
Capillary
Tiny much beached blood vessels composed of a single layer of endothelium cells
Valves
Control the direction of the blood flow
Portal system
A blood system that begins and ends in capillaries
Diastole
When the heart chambers relax
Systole
When the heart chambers contract
Pulse
The alternate expansion and contraction of the arteries
Blood pressure
The force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels( mainly arteries)
Lymphatic system
A secondary transport system that returns tissue fluid to the blood
Tissue fluid
Plasma without red blood cells, platelets and large proteins that surrounds all body cells and helps transport materials in and out of cells
