what is angina?
an important cardiac symptom that occurs when the body’s own blood supply cant keep up with metabolic demands
what is a characteristic sign of Angina?
a “squeezing” clenched fist
what kind of symptom is less likely to be cardiac in origin?
pain with breathing, affected by position, reproduced with palpation or unrelated to exertion
what does PND occur with? why?
- occurs with heart failure
- lying down increases the volume of intrathoracic blood and the weakened heart cannot keep up
what is orthopnea?
the need to be more upright to breathe
besides pulmonary disorders, what can hemoptysis occur with?
mitral stenosis
what is mitral stenosis?
a heart valve disorder that narrows or obstructs the mitral valve
what is the top prodromal symptoms of MI for women?
fatigue
what is the difference between fatigue from decreased CO and fatigue from anxiety or depression?
- fatigue from decreased CO is worse in the evening
- fatigue from anxiety or depression occurs all day or is worse in the morning
what does cyanosis or pallor indicate? what is it the result of?
- it indicates MI or decrease CO
- result of decreased tissue perfusion
when is cardiac edema worse? when is it better?
- worse in the evening
- better in the morning after elevating legs all night
in what side would cardiac edema be? what would the opposite finding indicate?
- cardiac edema is bilateral
- unilateral edema has a local venous cause
what is nocturia? what does this occur with?
- peeing at night
- occurs with heart failure when person is ambulatory at night

nutrition, smoking, alcohol, activity level, drugs
what should you note when screening infants for heart disease?
fatigue during feeding
