what are the components of inspection of the abdomen?
contour, hair distribution, umbilical, pulsation, skin, symmetry
what are the four categories you could put a person laying down in?
flat, portruding, rounded, scaphoid
where do you start auscultating bowel sounds? why?
you start at the RLQ because that is where you typically hear bowel sounds
what are five different descriptions of bowel sounds?
normoactive, hyperactive, hypoactive, b (means gas), silent
what is the technique used to palpate the abdomen?
using your four fingers press 1 cm deep into person’s skin and use a rotating motion
what are you looking for when palpating someone’s abdomen?
- if muscle guarding is voluntary or involuntary
- masses that could be tumors
what should you leave for last when palpating the abdomen?
leave any tender areas for last
which organs can you normally palpate?
xyphoid process, edge of liver, kidney, pulsating aorta, abs, sigmoid colon, ascending colon, uterus, bladder
what can indicate inflammation in the kidneys?
costovertebral tenderness
what are 7 reasons someone’s abdomen could be distended?
obesity, air, tumor, feces, pregnancy, ascites (fluid), ovarian cyst
what are abnormalities you could find upon inspecting the abdomen?
abdominal, umbilical or epigastric hernia and diastasis
what are 7 questions you need to ask when taking someone’s GI history?
access to groceries, 24 hour dietry recall, eating alone or social, bowel movements, medications, activities done after meals, nutrition
