Ch 21 - Peripheral Vascular System - assesment Flashcards
what is the profile sign? what do you use it for?
viewing the finger from the side
- used to check for clubbing
what is capillary refill an index of ?
cardiac output and peripheral perfusion
what conditions could affect capillary refill?
cool room, decreased body temp, cigarette smoking, peripheral edema, anemia
what does flattening of angle and clubbing occur with?
congenital cyanotic heart disease and cor pulmonale
what does a weak, thready pulse occur with?
occurs with shock and PAD
what does pallor in the legs indicate?
vasoconstriction
what does erythema in the legs indicate?
vasodilation
what is a sign of DVT?
asymmetric calf swelling
what does bilateral edema occur with?
systemic illness
what could leg asymmetry occur with?
lymphedema
what does brown discoloration in the legs occur with?
venous stasis
what could indicate arterial ischemia in the legs?
- a unilateral cool foot or leg or sudden temperature drop as you move down the leg
what can calf pain indicate?
phlebitis, tendinitis, gastrocnemius injury, lumbrosacral disorders
what does a bruit occur with?
turbulent blood flow
what peripheral arteries do you palpate in both legs?
popliteal, femoral, dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial
what does bilateral, dependent pitting edema indicate?
heart failure, diabetic neuropathy, hepatic cirrhosis
what does unilateral edema occur with?
occlusion of a deep vein
with lymphatic obstruction, what is the edema like?
nonpitting, feels hard to touch
why is it important to check the neck vessels when edema is present in the lower extremities?
- if neck vessels are distended the edema can be related to heart or pulmonary disease
- if the neck vessels are normal then there is something else causing the edema
what does elevational pallor indicate?
arterial insufficiency
what are some signs of arterial insufficiency?
- rubor,
- delayed venous filling
- motor loss
- sensory loss
what is subjective date to cover during a peripheral assesment?
leg pain or cramps, skin changes, lymph node enlargement, swelling , meds, smoking hist
what trophic changes associated with arterial insufficiency may be seen in the aging adult?
- thin, shiny skin
- thick ridged nails
- loss of hair on lower legs
what are signs of rayunud phenomen?
color changes, numbness
