heart and blood and stuff Flashcards
structure of haemoglobin☄️
4 polypeptide chains, with a haem group which can combine with oxygen x
role of haemoglobin?💥
oxygen molecules bind to the haem groups and are carried around the body to where they are needed in respiring tissues
name 3 factors affecting oxygen-haemoglobin binding?🌔
partial pressure of oxygen
partial pressure of carbon dioxide
saturation of haemoglobin with oxygen
how does saturation of haemoglobin with oxygen affect oxygen-haemoglobin binding?🌸🌼🌻🌞🌝
it’s hard for the first oxygen molecule to bind. once it does, it changes shape to make it easter for the second and third to bind (positive cooperatively). it is then harder for the fourth because there’s a low chance of finding a binding site x
what happens in diastole?🥀
heart relaxes, blood enters. as atria fill pressure rises. when atrial pressure is higher than ventricular valves open and blood flows through. contraction of atria move the blood. when ventricles are filled ventricular pressure rises, walls contract, atrioventricular valves close which further increases pressure. blood is forced into the aorta and pulmonary artery.
role of arteries?🦝🦥🦝
to carry blood away from the heart
they have a thick elastic layer to keep blood pressure high
role of veins and capillaries?🦩
veins:
carry blood from capillaries to the heart.
they have valves to stop blood flowing backwards
capillaries:
carry blood to organs. allow gas exchange to take place.
are once cell thick, branched and narrow to allow quick diffusion
name every area in heart the blood goes through in order🦚
