Heart Flashcards
What are the layers of the heart? (3)
Pericardium
Myocardium
Endocardium
What is the pericardium?
Sac that covers the heart
What is the myocardium?
Heart muscle (thickest layer)
What is the endocardium?
Lines the heart
What is pericarditis?
- Inflammation of the pericardium
- Decreased production of serous fluid
- Causes a rustling sound, friction rub
What will happen if the heart continues to rub?
It can exert excess pressure and cause heart failure
What is endocarditis?
- Inflammation of the endocardium
2. Bacterial infection
How many chambers does the heart have? How many are superior or inferior?
4 chambers
2 superior: thin-walled atrium
2 inferior: thick-walled ventricles
What do heart valves do?
Prevents backflow of blood
What are the 4 valves called?
Tricuspid
Pulmonary
Bicuspid
Aortic
What is an incompetent valve?
Valve opens, but does not close completely- leads to backward leaking
What is a valvular stenosis?
Stiff valve that does not open all the way due to bacteria infection (Bactria cause scar tissue on valve)
Treatment for infection?
Valve replacement: either mechanical
Pathway of blood!! Important!
- Superior & inferior vena cava and coronary veins
- Right atrium
- Tricuspid valve
- Right ventricle
- Pulmonary valve
- Pulmonary artery
- Lungs
- Pulmonary veins
- Left atrium
- Bicuspid valve
- Left ventricle
- Aortic valve
- Aorta
- Arteries
- Arterioles
- Capillaries
- Venule
- Veins
Myocardium blood supply
Heart is not nourished by the blood that passes through it
Coronary arteries supple what?
O2 rich blood
Coronary veins do what?
Take CO2 to right atrium
What is a myocardial infarction?
- Heart attack
- Part of myocardium dies
- Lack of blood and O2
- Scar tissue forms
- Heart becomes stiff
- Worst: left ventricle
Percent composition of blood?
54% plasma
45% RBC
1% WBC and platelets
Blood is collected in a what tube?
Centrifuge tube- blood is spun and heavier formed elements move to the outside of the tube
What are Leukocytes? (WBC)
- Larger, more complex than RBC
- Fewer than RBC
- Function: immunity
What are platelets? (Thrombocytes)
- Cell fragments
- Lifespan: 5-9 days
- Important in the process of blood clotting
What’s the heart’s function?
Pressurize blood to flow through the vessels
