Hearing Flashcards
How the sound wave is transmitted: Outer Ear
The Pinna captures sound waves from the outside environment. These sound waves travel through the external auditory meatus towards the tympanic membrane, causing it to vibrate.
How the sound wave is transmitted: Middle Ear
The ossicles are small bones in the middle ear that amplify sound energy. The oval window, at the footbed of the stapes, acts apon the perilymph within the cochlea
How the sound wave is transmitted: Inner Ear
The cochlea is comprised of three chambers, each filled with fluid, perilymph and endolymph. The movement of this fluid, as a result of amplification from the osicles, leads to movement of the cochleas basilar membrane. As teh basilar membrane moves, its hair cells bend and depolarise, allowing an action potential to be sent along the cochlea part of the Vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII) and travels towards the temporal lobe.
