transverse plane
horizontal through the centre of the body, separating the top and bottom halves
sagittal plane
vertically down the centre of the body, with an arm and leg either side
coronal / frontal plane
vertically down the centre of the body, separating the frontside and backside of the body
anterior/ ventral
front
dorsal/ posterior
back
proximal
closer to the centre of the body (moving vertically)
distal
farther from the centre of the body (moving vertically)
medial
closer to the central line of the body (moving horizontally)
flexion
decrease the angle between bones (bending)
lateral
farther from the central line of the body (moving horizontally)
extension
increase the angle between bones (e.g. opening arm )
abduction
move away from the midline
adduction
move toward the midline
rotation
pivoting back and forth
gliding
surfaces moving against eachother
