Q

ABC Transport has its own ‘in house’ workshop. There are 4 technicians and a Workshop Manager who
work in the 4-bay workshop. Currently there is 1 vehicle in the workshop having a gearbox change. The
technician has removed the gearbox and it is now suspended from an engine hoist/lifter. As the
technician rolls the hoist across the workshop it collapses and the gearbox falls to the floor narrowly
missing the technician’s feet.
Give 4 actions that ABC Transport should now do to ensure it adheres to the requirement of the
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and any relevant regulations within it.

A

The collapse of certain types of lifting equipment is considered a dangerous occurrence and is reportable under
RIDDOR. The report must be notified to HSE within 10 days of the incident via the website. No immediate report
is required.

Q

You are the new Transport Manager at Move it Haulage Ltd, with a fleet of rigid curtain-sided trucks and
truck/trailer combinations. The directors have asked that you carry out a risk assessment for the
operation of loading a vehicle in the yard. The loads generally consist of palletised boxes (shrink
wrapped) and sometimes loose boxes and on the odd occasion metal drums. The boxes vary in weight
and size, but are marked with the weight. The warehouse staff and drivers also have access to a forklift
truck.
With the HASAWA 1974 in mind, list and briefly describe the actions you will take to complete your
risk assessment.

A

Identify the hazards: Consider the operation of loading the vehicle, and identify what could reasonably be expected to
cause harm. Talk to loaders and drivers to highlight potential hazard issues.
Decide who might be harmed and why: Both drivers and loaders are at risk of manual handling injuries to backs and
crush injuries to hands and feet.
Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions: The likelihood of back injury is high so consider eliminating the need to
manually handle loads on to the vehicle by using a FLT operated by a competent operator with the correct forks etc for
all pallets, drums and large boxes. For smaller consignments consider the use of conveyor belts to get the boxes into
the vehicle which will then reduce the amount of manual handling required. Ensure appropriate control measures are
implemented and that all staff receives manual handling training.
Record all findings: Record all the findings of the risk assessment in writing and produce the safe systems of work
(control measures) again in writing. These measures will then need to be shared with all relevant members of staff
ensuring that they understand and will comply with those safe systems of work.
Review and update: Review the risk assessment and control measures at appropriate intervals and if the operation
changes significantly or in the event of an accident.
