Give a definition of physical fitness
The ability of our body to do activities with little fatigue and with enough energy left for emergencies
Why do we fitness test?
To identify strengths and weaknesses in performance To show how the body has adapted to training Indicator on current fitness levels To provide a baseline before training To compare against normal values Monitor progress Monitor progress following injury Set targets
How do we test?
Test one component Should be reliable Performer should understand the test and its protocols Safety, same equipment, valid Neutral weather conditions
What are the factors that may affect MY participation in physical activity?
Finance, encouragement from friends and family, age, gender, transport, school facilities, injuries
Fitness tests but be valid and reliable, what does this mean?
Valid: the fitness test should measure the actual fitness component that you are interested in.
Eg. 30m sprint to test speed
Reliable: the test should consistently give the same results if repeated
What are the factors that affect participation and what are the negative and positive affects?
Friend/family
Positive- encouragement and support
Negative- may not be interested in the sport
Gender
Positive- both genders have more opportunities
Negative- opposing genders may not want to mix
Social
Positive- financially able
Negative- can’t afford it
Race
Positive- can help to integrate different ethnical backgrounds
Negative- racial discrimination. Racial comments can be made
How do age affect your fitness?
You are usually your fittest in your 20s
After 30, your muscles get weaker, your heart rate decreases, joints get stiffer.
How do gender affect your fitness?
Up to age 11 both genders are equal. This is because:
Strength- males grow twice as stronger because they have more muscles
Cardiovascular- males transport oxygen better because they have larger hearts and lungs and more blood
How do physique affect your fitness?
Your build and shape make your better adapted to certain sports.
How will diet and exercise affect your fitness?
Diet- certain foods are needed for energy, growth and repair.
Exercise- regular exercise will make you fitter
