When is a project notifiable to H&S Executive
A project is notifiable to the H&S if the construction work is scheduled to last longer than -
• 30 working days
• Have more than 20 workers working simultaneously at any point on the project
• or exceed 500 person days

What are CDM regs and what is their purpose?
main set of regulations for managing HEALTH, SAFETY and WELFARE of construction projects
Purpose:
- PLAN work - risk managed from start to finish
- APPOINTING the right people for the right job at the right time
- COOPERATION & COORDINATION of work with others
- provide a framework to ensure everyone has the information instruction, training and supervision needed to carry out their job in a way that secures health and safety
- ensures workers are consulted and engaged and their welfare is protected

What are the responsibilities of individuals and organisations under health and safety law?
STATUTORY OBLIGATIONS
- Duties placed on employers, self-employed, people in contrlo of premises and designers, manufacturers, importers of articles used for work
- prepare written statement of safety policies, organisation & arrangements
- provide adequate first aid facilities
- make known and understood to employers
- factor H&S in during the design process, mitigate risks and hazards
- during construction, use, cleaning, maintenance
- consideration of the builder/user/public/bystanders
employee: duty to exercise reasonable care to him/herself and fellow employees and cooperate with employer in carrying out statutory requirements
Local authority:
Has a statutory duty to safeguard public H&S - for a claim to be made an imminent danger to the claimant’s H&S must be established
What are the key duties of the principal designer?
- written appointment by client
- assist the client in identifying, obtaining and collating the pre-construction information
- provide pre-construction information to designers, principal contractor and contractors
- ensure that designers comply with their duties and co-operate with each other
- liaise with principal contractor for the duration of the appointment

What are the roles of the Principal Contractor under CDM? When is a PC required?
PC appointed at the construction phase of the project by the client where the project involves more than one contractor. Plan, manage, monitor and coordinate the construction phase of the project. Liaise with client + PD, prepare ConstructionPhase Plan, ensure site inductions are provided, coordinating work between contractors, welfare facilities, workers are engaged in HS.
What are the roles of designers under CDM?
Eliminate, reduce or control foreseeable risks that may arise during construction, maintenance and use of building. Provide info to other members of team to help fulfil their CDM duties.
In what ways is the client responsible for the landscape architect?
Under CDM 2015 regulations the client must make suitable arrangements for managing a project. INCLS: making sure other duty holders are appointed and sufficient time and resources are allocated, the relevant information is prepared and provided to other duty holders and ensure that principle contractor and principle designer (could beL.A) carry out their duties. Clients also have a responsibility to provide welfare facilities.
What is the Health and safety executive (HSE)?
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the national independent watchdog for work-related health, safety and illness. It acts in the public interest to reduce work-related death and serious injury across Great Britain’s workplaces. Created by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
What are the key requirements of COSHH?
In the first instance, preventative measures should be taken to avoid the substance or process, substitute it with something safer or use the substance in a safer form. If exposure cannot be prevented, then it must be controlled to ensure that the risk of harm is ‘as low as is reasonably practicable’.
What are the responsibilities under the health and safety (H&S) law and how they affect work?
Effective health and safety management inc. good cooperation, communication and coordination
Employers must:
Undertake a risk assessment to determine what might cause harm and undertake measures to stop such harm.
Explain to employees what may cause harm how this is to be controlled, and who is responsible.
Consult with employees and their H&S representatives
Give necessary training (free of charge).
Provide any equipment and protective clothing necessary, and ensure it is looked after.
Provide toilets, washing facilities and drinking water.
Report major injuries and fatalities at work to the Health and Safety Execcutive (HSE) Incident Contact Centre: 0345 300 9923. Report other injuries, diseases and dangerous incidents online at www.hse.gov.uk.
Take out insurance in case of injury or illness through work. Display a hard copy or electronic copy of the current insurance certificate where it can easily be read.
Work with other employers or contractors sharing the workplace or providing employees (such as agency workers), so that everyone’s health and safety is protected.
Employees must:
Follow training when using any work items provided by the employer.
Take reasonable care of their and other people’s health and safety.
Co-operate with the employer on health and safety.
Tell someone (the employer, supervisor, or health and safety representative) if the employee thinks the work or inadequate precautions are putting anyone’s health and safety at serious risk.
