Q

What is a “risk assessment”?

A
  • Examining what in your work could cause harm
  • Who could be harmed and how
  • What steps you can take to eliminate or reduce that risk in advance,
  • Record and implement findings, advise others, review regularly

Q

What is involved in a “dynamic risk assessment”?

A

Assessing risk just before, or during, the work activity.
- Is it safe to continue
- Where are the exits
- Who is with me, where are their exits
- Is everyone with me competent

Q

What is a risk assessment “matrix”?

A

Something very boring, where you create a “grid” of “hazard severity vs risk”
Give each entry in the matrix a score.
We use a more subjective approach.

Q

What is a fire risk assessment, and when must they be updated?

A

An assessment report of the risk of fire within a building, undertaken by a competent person.
No strict rules, but government guidance says:
- Review annually, redo every 3 years, or after major building amendment (3 storeys+)
- Review every 2 years, redo every 4 years, or after major building amendment (less than 3 storeys)

A

Designer(s) providing comprehensive info about the risks originating from their designs to the PD, PC and client.

21
Q

When is a project F10 notifiable under CDM?

A
  • 500 person working days, or:
  • 20 workers on site at one time, AND more than 30 working days
22
Q

What are the principles of risk prevention?

A

Avoid risk
Remove risk
Replace risk
Minimise risk through technical means
Minimise risk through administration means
If all else fails, protection measures (PPE)

23
Q

Give me an example of one of the duties that you are responsible for under the Health and Safety at Work Act?

A

Section 7 : employees must take reasonable care for the health and safety of [themselves] and of other persons who may be affected by [their] acts or omissions at work;

EG. Using PPE provided to me by employer, and not ignoring it.

24
Q

Give me some examples of the general requirements of the H&S at Work etc. Act that directly apply to you.

A

Do not tamper with H&S equipment.
Use PPE provided.
Follow company H&S policy.

25
Q

Give me some examples of the general requirements of the Working at Height regulations which apply to the work you undertake/manage.

A

I must make sure any working/surveying from height that I do is properly planned, and foreseeable risks mitigated against.

I must make sure working at height precautions are undertaken as required on any works I manage (eg. wearing harnesses clipped in on MEWPs)

Check scafftags on scaffold

26
Q

What is COSHH?

A

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health:
- Requires employers to control hazardous substances
- First by identifying them
- Then decide precautions to prevent or mitigate effects (there is a hierarchy - similar to H&S)
