What is meant by a Communicable Disease?
Are diseases that can spread from person to person or between animal and people.
What is meant by a Non-communicable Disease?
Are diseases that cannot spread between people or animals.
If a person’s Immune System is weak what are they more lightly to suffer from?
Increased chance of suffering from communicable diseases, because their body is less likely to be able to defend themselves against Pathogens.
Name 3 factors that can affect your health?
1) Diet
2) Stress
3) Access to medicines (life situation)
What is the human cost of Non-communicable diseases?
1) Tens of millions of people die from them a year
2) Lower quality of life or shorter lifespan, along with
loved ones suffering
What is the finical cost of Non-communicable diseases?
1) NHS - money spent on research and treating
2) Reduction in countries workforce
3) The family may have to move to accommodate and/or lose income
What is meant by Risk Factor?
A factor that is linked to an increase in the likelihood that a person will develop a certain disease during their lifetime.
Name 3 risk factors?
1) Smoking - Damages walls of arteries and cell lining (Lung Cancer)
2) Obesity - linked to many cancers e.g Kidney or Liver cancer
3) Radiation/UV exposure - Affects the way cells divide e.g skin cancer
What causes Cancer?
The uncontrolled cell growth and division, which forms a tumour
What is a Benign Tumour?
1) Grows until no more room
2) Stays in one place
3) Isn’t normally dangerous or cancerous
What is a Malignant Tumor?
1) Tumour spreads to surrounding healthy cells
2) Cells break off and move to other parts of the body in the bloodstream
3) Cause secondary tumours as they invade other areas in the body
4) Dangerous and Cancerous
