Controlling Blood Glucose and Diabetes Flashcards
What does eating food containing carbohydrates do?
Puts glucose into the blood from the gut
What does increased exercise mean?
That much more glucose will be removed from the blood.
What does excess glucose gets stored as?
GlycogEn in the liver
What must the level of glucose in the blood be kept at?
A constant level, any changes are monitored and controlled by the pancreas, using insulin and glucagon, in a negative feedback loop
What is Diabetes?
A condition that affects your ability to control your blood sugar level
What occurs in Type 1 Diabetes?
The pancreas produces little to no insulin, this means that the persons blood glucose level can rise to a level which is lethal.
What therapy is used to help treat Type 1 Diabetes?
Insulin therapy - involves several injections of insulin throughout the day. (depends on diet and exercise)
This makes sure that glucose is removed from the blood quickly once the food has been digested, stopping it getting too high.
What is another way that people affected by Type 1 Diabetes must think about?
Limiting their intake of food rich in simple carbohydrates e.g sugars and taking regular exercise
What occurs in Type 2 Diabetes?
A person becomes resistant to their own insulin (still produce insulin, however, body cells don’t respond properly) - blood glucose level still can rise to lethal levels.
What is a major risk factor of Type 2 Diabetes?
Obesity
How can Type 2 Diabetes be controlled?
By eating carbohydrtae-controlled diets and getting regular exercise.
