Head- Blood Supply Flashcards
Three main arteries supplying brain
2 ICA
vertebrobasilar artery
Where ICA branches into the external and internal carotid
Carotid sinus
Internal carotid arteries enter the cranium via __
carotid foramen –> carotid canal –> penetrates the dura
Where the ICarteries change direction
Foramen lacerum
Intracranial branches of the ICA
Anterior cerebral
Ant communicating
Middle cerebral arteries
Post communicating arteries
Vertebrobasilar supply
subclavian–> Vertebral arteries –> post inf cerebellar artery –> basilar –> cerebellar, pontine, post cerebral
Vertebrobasilar course
Transverse formaina of cervical vertebrae –> foramen magnum
External carotid
Anterior branches–> sup thyroid –> larynx & thyroid gland
Lingual artery –> oral floor & tongue & large facial artery –> superficial facial region
Posterior branches –> occipital artery & post auricular artery –> ear
Terminal branches = maxillary artery (–> muscles of mastication, postmed. facial skeletone, meninges) & superficial temporal artery (–> temporal region of head, part of ear)
Supratrochlear & supraorbital veins- drainage and further branches
Drain anterior scalp
–> opthalmic veins –> angular vein–> facial
Superficial temporal vein
Drains lateral scalp
–> retromandibular vein
Occipital vein
Drains posterior aspect of scalp
–> plexus of veins in suboccipital triangle
Lympatic drainage
Occipital region: occipital region –> occipital nodes –> upper cervical nodes
Post to vertex: to mastoid nodes –> upper deep cervical nodes
Ant to vertex: to preauricular and parotid nodes
