Head and neck gross anatomy 2: Face Flashcards
What are the three divisions of the trigeminal nerve?
V1 Opthalmic
V2 Maxillary
V3 Mandibular
Which nerve supplies the muscles of facial expression?
Facial nerve (VII)
What are the sensory and autonomic functions of the facial nerve?
- Receives taste sensation from anterior 2/3 of tongue
- Supplies a small amount of efferent innervation to the oropharnyx below the palatine tonsil
- Supplies the parasympathetic fibres to the submandibular and sublingual glands, also to nasal mucosa and lacrimal gland.
- Efferent limb of corneal reflex
Which muscles act as dilatory of the eye?
Levator palpebrae superioris
?Lower eyelid retractor
Paralysis of oricularis oculi can lead to a serious complication. What is it?
Failure of eyelid to close, damage to cornea.
Which muscle acts as the sphincter of the eye?
Orbicularis oculi
What is the function of the buccinator muscle?
Presses cheek against teeth, compresses distended cheek.
Where does the parotid gland open in the mouth?
Pierces buccinator, opens into oral cavity near 2nd upper molar.
What nerve divides into five branches within the substance of the parotid gland?
Facial nerve (VII)
What do the branches of the facial nerve supply?
Muscles of facial expression etc
Submandibular and sublingual gland
What is the function of the masseter?
Elevation of the mandible
What is the nerve supply to the masseter?
Mandibular (V3) branch of trigeminal.
Which cranial nerve carries cutaneous sensation from the face and forehead?
Trigeminal nerve (V)
