Head And Neck Flashcards
What’s the difference between Sialadenitis and Sialadenosis?
Sialadenitis: painful swelling/inflammation in the Salivary gland
Sialadenosis: nonpainful bilateral enlargement of mandibular (usually) gland
What is the most commonly affected gland in the dog with salivary mucoceles?
Sublingual
(monostomatic portion)
What type of incision should we use when performing a parotid gland adenectomy vs mandibular/sublingual one?
Parotid: vertical incision
Mandibular/sublingual: more horizontal/following jawline
What the hell is a salivary mucocoele anyhow?
accumulation of saliva within a nonepithelial, nonsecretory lining
(soft, nonpainful swelling)
so the bag of saliva that forms around it is not a cyst, it’s granulation tissue lining, trying to wall off.
What is a ranula?
an accumulation of saliva in the intermandibular space
(sublingual/submucosal swelling)
What is the definitive treatment for salivary mucocoeles?
surgical removal of the involved gland
*EXCEPT: parotid sialocele d/t duct rupture*
Failure to identify and ligate which vessels (on dorsomedial aspect) can result in significant bleeding if cut during dissection in accessing a salivary mucocele with large ranula?
greater auricular artery and vein
(enter capsule on its dorsomedial aspect)
