What is the purpose of HAZWOPER?
To standardize and improve ability for employees and employers to respond to hazardous waste operations.
What is the scope of HAZWOPER?
- Mandatory/voluntary cleanup of hazwaste sites
- Corrective actions involving clean up
- Operations at treatment, storage, and disposal facilities
- Emergency response involving hazwaste
What is a hazardous substance?
Any substance where exposure can result in adverse effects on employee health/safety
What is a hazardous waste operation?
Any operation conducted within scope of HAZWOPER standard
What is a hazmat team?
Organized group designated by employer who are expected to handle/control leaks/spills of hazardous substances
What is emergency response?
Response effort by employee (or other responder) from outside the immediate release area
What is the purpose of a safety and health plan?
Used to identify, evaluate, and control safety and health hazards and provide for emergency response for hazwaste operations
What is involved in site characterization/analysis?
Used to evaluate hazards to determine appropriate controls
When is monitoring conducted?
When site evaluation indicates IDLH/ionizing radiation or when there is not enough information to eliminate these conditions
When can risk identification commence?
After hazards have been properly identified and in what amounts
What are the primary means of controlling hazards?
Engineering and administrative controls
When the cleanup process begins, who should be monitored?
High risk employees
What is the purpose of decon?
To remove contaminants from workers/equipment and prevent exposure/contamination of clean areas
What are two general methods of decon?
Physical and/or chemical removal
What is a decontamination line?
Series of decon stations at the contamination reduction zone
