Hazardous Earth - Climate: Worlds climate system function Flashcards
What is the Coriolis Effect?
Air doesn’t flow in a straight line because the Earth is rotating. As the air moves above the surface of the Earth, underneath it the planet rotates so winds actually follow a curved path.
In the Northern Hemisphere which way are the winds deflected to?
Right
In the Southern Hemisphere which way are the winds deflected to?
Left
OCEANIC CIRCULATION
1. What are surface ocean currents caused by?
2What are deep ocean currents caused by?
- movement of wind across the top of the water
2. water sinks and rises because of temperature changes
Identify two ways in which heat at the equator can be redistributed around the world?
- water currents transport warm water and precipitation from the equator toward the poles
2water currents transfer cold water from the poles back to the equator.
What are jet streams?
These form mostly at the boundaries of the main circulation cells where there is significant temperature difference.
They can change the weather for different areas.
